I just returned from this exhibition. What an inspiration! I was thrilled to be able to see Amy Sherald's painting ... I am a big fan.
The first-prize winner of the 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, Amy Sherald has gained significant prominence recently as the commissioned artist for the official portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama. The Outwin marks Sherald’s return to UNC-Chapel Hill; she had her first solo exhibitionin 2011 at UNC’s Sonya Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History.
There were so many outstanding artists represented in the show. I was unfamiliar with most of them. One artist that impressed me greatly was Brenda Zlamany. Her work is wide ranging, and you can see more of it at brendazlamany.com
I love her stark backgrounds and the intensity of expression in her portraits.
The exhibit runs through August 26, 2018. I would encourage you to visit.
